Can you remove a bad Google review of your hotel? What works, and what to do instead

You can't delete a Google review yourself, even on your own Business Profile. You can report it, and Google removes it only if it breaks Google's policies. A review that's just negative, or one you disagree with, will usually stay up. So there are two questions: does it break the rules, and if not, how do you reply?

When Google may remove a review

Google's Maps policy covers, among other things:

A guest saying breakfast was cold isn't any of these. That review needs a reply, not a report.

How to report a Google review

  1. Go to your Business Profile and select Read reviews.
  2. Next to the review, select the report icon.
  3. Choose the reason that matches the policy it breaks.
  4. Select Send report.

You can also report and track reviews in Google's Reviews Management Tool. It shows whether a report is pending or was reviewed, and if Google found no violation you can appeal once. Google says a report typically takes several days. Steps are in Google's help article.

When the review stays up

  1. Reply publicly and calmly. Future guests read your reply more closely than the review.
  2. Take it offline. Give a name and email so the guest can get in touch.
  3. Fix the cause if it's real, then say so: "We've since replaced the kettles in every room."
  4. If you can't find the stay, say so politely and invite them to contact you. Don't accuse anyone.
  5. Get more recent reviews. One bad review matters less under ten recent good ones. See how to get more Google reviews.

Questions

Can a hotel owner delete a Google review?

No. You can report it and Google decides.

How long does Google take?

Google says several days for a report. An appeal's result comes by email.

Will replying to a bad review make it worse?

A short, calm reply usually helps future guests trust you more than silence does.
